What is language exchange?

Language exchange is when two people learn a language from each other. For example, your language partner helps you with Chinese, and you help them with English! Take turns conversing in both languages and learn lots of native expression from each other!

How is this different from other exchange platforms?

Other language exchange platforms are overly casual. They're more like social media or dating platforms, and hardly help you with your fluency. tokimonki is here to change that - we are creating a serious learning community where language learning is the priority, and not an afterthought.

How can you be sure I can find a good language partner?

Everyone on tokimonki is serious about language learning. When finding a partner, you'll be able to see lots of details to help you make an informed decision about them. This includes details about their learning goals, their background and their availabilities, and also peer ratings that other language learners on tokimonki have given them!

I'm introverted... won't it be awkward to practice with others?

Language exchange is only awkward if you don't know what to talk about... luckily, we've curated hundreds of discussion materials (with topics for all levels!) for you to use with your language partner! No awkward small talk here! Just fun conversations and effective language practice!

What languages do you offer?

Right now, we only support English to Chinese language exchange. this means that you MUST be a native English, or a native Chinese speaker to participate.

I'm not a native English or Chinese speaker. Can I join?

No, you MUST be a native (or near native English or Chinese speaker). Language exchange is a method of practice where you exchange your native language for your language partner's native language. This means that you need to be able to help your language partner improve, just as how they will be helping you to improve.

Can I use tokimonki if I'm a complete beginner?

No. Unfortuantely not! To join tokimonki, it is a mandatory requirement that all learners have already learned the basics of the language to hold some simple conversations. If you have just started learning a language, we recommend finding some private tutors or using some simple apps like HelloChinese!
